English — Artist bio

Hugo Prera is a Guatemalan-born, self-taught artist whose work explores memory, identity, culture, technology, and the human desire to leave something meaningful behind.

Born in Salamá, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala, Prera showed an aptitude for art from an early age. His work was recognized throughout his school years, and while still a student, his high school acquired and displayed his artwork as part of its library collection.

Working primarily in digital media through Procreate, while continuing to explore drawing and oil painting, Prera draws inspiration from an unusually broad visual and cultural vocabulary: classical art, cartoons, music, Hispanic and Mayan heritage, and the street-art culture of Los Angeles. His digital practice expanded significantly in 2020, beginning a period of sustained creation and the development of a deeply personal body of work.

At the center of Prera’s practice is the belief that art can communicate what language cannot. He creates with the hope that his work brings joy, peace, reflection, and connection—and with an awareness that the work may ultimately outlive its maker.

Returning to Guatemala to exhibit carries particular meaning for Prera. It is both a homecoming and an opportunity to celebrate a country whose people, traditions, food, music, generosity, and culture remain deeply connected to his identity and his work.

Time, to him, is finite. Art is not.

His ambition is not simply to create something beautiful, but to leave behind work capable of connecting with someone, bringing meaning to a moment, and perhaps even changing a life.
